AI in Libraries: Beyond the Hype

The public launch of ChatGPT in late 2022 triggered huge levels of interest in AI and machine learning. This panel discussion will go beyond the hype to look at the benefits AI might offer for libraries, their diverse range of users and communities. The pace at which technologies evolve can create a sense of rapid change – but humans (and their needs) adapt more slowly.

Our topical discussion aims to explore: how libraries could use AI to improve services and provide access to knowledge and culture; ensuring AI tools are compatible with library values; the role of libraries in increasing AI-related information and literacy; how librarians can build on the data and information skills they already have, and work to minimise the harms and biases of AI.

Organised by the British Library and held at The Leeds Library, the event will also feature speakers from the University of Leeds, Leeds Libraries and Manchester Metropolitan University.

Mia Ridge

Mia is the British Library’s Digital Curator for Western Heritage Collections. Part of the Digital Research team, she provides advice and training on computational research, AI / machine learning and crowdsourcing. A Co-Investigator on Living with Machines (2018-23), she co-curated the Living with Machines exhibition with Leeds Museums and Galleries (2022-23)

Masud Khokhar, Librarian at University of Leeds

Masud Khokhar

Masud is the University Librarian and Keeper of the Brotherton Collection at the University of Leeds. A computer scientist by education, and with libraries in his DNA, Masud is passionate about digital leadership and innovation in the changing library and archive environments. His core interests include strategic development, digital transformation, open research, and inclusive leadership. Masud is also Chair of Research Libraries UK (RLUK) and the Chair of this Libraries in Leeds network.

 

Sue Lacey Bryant

Sue is Visiting Professor in knowledge and information mobilisation at Manchester Metropolitan University. Formerly Chief Knowledge Officer for the NHS in England, Sue was the programme manager for the groundbreaking Topol Review. Fascinated by how AI and machine learning can be applied to knowledge solutions and knowledge services, Sue instigated the CILIP Technology Review which examined the skills librarians will need to shape new services. As Vice President of CILIP, Sue chairs a national health literacy partnership focused on enabling the public to develop the skills and confidence to find and use health information in our digital age.

 

Liam Garnett

Liam is the Senior Librarian for Digital with Leeds (public) Libraries, whose offer includes digital learning, digital health, digital inclusion and creative digital. He has supported the Raspberry Pi Foundation in piloting its Experience AI project that has now been rolled out worldwide. He has also developed unplugged AI workshops with STEM Learning aimed at engaging students with the possibilities and ramifications of using AI.
